After leaving Wooler on the Coldstream road, the (A697), take the B6351 at Akeld and drive on to and through Kirknewton. You will pass the site of Gefrin - home of the kings of Northumbria. The hills on your left as you travel are topped with ancient British camps.
Shortly afer leaving Kirknewton you will cross a small bridge. You can park on the right immediately after crossing this bridge. The start of this walk is on the other side of the road, with a public footpath sign to start you on your way.
The walk meanders by streams, rises and falls through open and wooded countryside, with splendid hill views and numerous places to stop and picnic, or just breathe!
There may be a place on your walk - perhaps where you stop to picnic - where your nostrils are tormented by a somewhat unpleasant smell! It may, if you're lucky, be one of the 'wild' goats that live in this area. Once domesticated, these animals now roam freely in several parts of the Cheviot Hills.
Torlee house marks the beginning of the last stage of your jouney. From here a broad track takes you down to Old Yeavering farm, and the road. The last part of this walk is along the road you drove along to Kirknewton, and back to your car.
